Make Parallel<T> more T: !Default accessible (#17943)
# Objective

`ThreadLocal::<T>::default()` doesn't require `T: Default`, so
`Parallel<T>` shouldn't require it either.

## Solution

- Replaced the `Default` derive with a manually specified impl.
- Added `Parallel::borrow_local_mut_or` as a non-`T: Default`-requiring
alternative to `borrow_local_mut`.
- Added `Parallel::scope_or` as a non-`T: Default`-requiring alternative
to `scope`.

Have System::run_unsafe return Result. (#19145)
# Objective

Allow combinator and pipe systems to delay validation of the second
system, while still allowing the second system to be skipped.

Fixes #18796

Allow fallible systems to be used as one-shot systems, reporting errors
to the error handler when used through commands.

Fixes #19722

Allow fallible systems to be used as run conditions, including when used
with combinators. Alternative to #19580.

Always validate parameters when calling the safe
`run_without_applying_deferred`, `run`, and `run_readonly` methods on a
`System`.

## Solution

Have `System::run_unsafe` return a `Result`.  

We want pipe systems to run the first system before validating the
second, since the first system may affect whether the second system has
valid parameters. But if the second system skips then we have no output
value to return! So, pipe systems must return a `Result` that indicates
whether the second system ran.

But if we just make pipe systems have `Out = Result<B::Out>`, then
chaining `a.pipe(b).pipe(c)` becomes difficult. `c` would need to accept
the `Result` from `a.pipe(b)`, which means it would likely need to
return `Result` itself, giving `Result<Result<Out>>`!

Instead, we make *all* systems return a `Result`! We move the handling
of fallible systems from `IntoScheduleConfigs` and `IntoObserverSystem`
to `SystemParamFunction` and `ExclusiveSystemParamFunction`, so that an
infallible system can be wrapped before being passed to a combinator.

As a side effect, this enables fallible systems to be used as run
conditions and one-shot systems.

Now that the safe `run_without_applying_deferred`, `run`, and
`run_readonly` methods return a `Result`, we can have them perform
parameter validation themselves instead of requiring each caller to
remember to call them. `run_unsafe` will continue to not validate
parameters, since it is used in the multi-threaded executor when we want
to validate and run in separate tasks.

Note that this makes type inference a little more brittle. A function
that returns `Result<T>` can be considered either a fallible system
returning `T` or an infallible system returning `Result<T>` (and this is
important to continue supporting `pipe`-based error handling)! So there
are some cases where the output type of a system can no longer be
inferred. It will work fine when directly adding to a schedule, since
then the output type is fixed to `()` (or `bool` for run conditions).
And it will work fine when `pipe`ing to a system with a typed input
parameter.

I used a dedicated `RunSystemError` for the error type instead of plain
`BevyError` so that skipping a system does not box an error or capture a
backtrace.

I would have expected CI to catch this earlier, but I have not
investigated why it did not.

## Solution

Wrap the parts of `DebugName` that use `Cow` and `String` in
`cfg::alloc!`.

If the `debug` feature is enabled, then `DebugName` itself stores a
`Cow`, so make the `debug` feature require `bevy_platform/alloc`.

That is, you can use `DebugName` in no-std contexts when it's just a
ZST! (I bet it's even possible to support no-std `debug` by storing
`&'static str` instead of `Cow<'static, str>`, but that seemed like too
much complexity for now.)

ECS: put strings only used for debug behind a feature (#19558)

- Many strings in bevy_ecs are created but only used for debug: system
name, component name, ...
- Those strings make a significant part of the final binary and are no
use in a released game

## Solution

- Use [`strings`](https://linux.die.net/man/1/strings) to find ...
strings in a binary
- Try to find where they come from
- Many are made from `type_name::<T>()` and only used in error / debug
messages
- Add a new structure `DebugName` that holds no value if `debug` feature
is disabled
- Replace `core::any::type_name::<T>()` by `DebugName::type_name::<T>()`

Measurements were taken without the new feature being enabled by
default, to help with commands

Simplify bevy_utils Features (#19090)

Now that `bevy_platform::cfg` is merged, we can start tidying up
features. This PR starts with `bevy_utils`.

## Solution

- Removed `serde` and `critical-section` features (they were just
re-exports of `bevy_platform` anyway)
- Removed `std`, `alloc` features, relying on `bevy_platform::cfg` to
check for availability.
- Added `parallel` feature to provide access to the `Parallel` type.
- Moved the `HashMap` type aliases into `map.rs` for better
organisation.

Rename bevy_platform_support to bevy_platform (#18813)
# Objective

The goal of `bevy_platform_support` is to provide a set of platform
agnostic APIs, alongside platform-specific functionality. This is a high
traffic crate (providing things like HashMap and Instant). Especially in
light of https://github.com/bevyengine/bevy/discussions/18799, it
deserves a friendlier / shorter name.

Given that it hasn't had a full release yet, getting this change in
before Bevy 0.16 makes sense.

## Solution

- Rename `bevy_platform_support` to `bevy_platform`.

Automatically enable portable-atomic when required (#17570)
# Objective

- Contributes to #15460
- Reduce quantity and complexity of feature gates across Bevy

## Solution

- Used `target_has_atomic` configuration variable to automatically
detect impartial atomic support and automatically switch to
`portable-atomic` over the standard library on an as-required basis.

## Notes

To explain the technique employed here, consider getting `Arc` either
from `alloc::sync` _or_ `portable-atomic-util`. First, we can inspect
the `alloc` crate to see that you only have access to `Arc` _if_
`target_has_atomic = "ptr"`. We add a target dependency for this
particular configuration _inverted_:

portable-atomic-util = { version = "0.2.4", default-features = false }
```

This ensures we only have the dependency when it is needed, and it is
entirely excluded from the dependency graph when it is not. Next, we
adjust our configuration flags to instead of checking for `feature =
"portable-atomic"` to instead check for `target_has_atomic = "ptr"`:

The benefits of this technique are three-fold:

1. For platforms without full atomic support, the functionality is
enabled automatically.
2. For platforms with atomic support, the dependency is never included,
even if a feature was enabled using `--all-features` (for example)
3. The `portable-atomic` feature no longer needs to virally spread to
all user-facing crates, it's instead something handled within
`bevy_platform_support` (with some extras where other dependencies also
need their features enabled).

## Summary of Changes

### Documentation Indentation

When using lists in documentation, proper indentation is now linted for.
This means subsequent lines within the same list item must start at the
same indentation level as the item.

/// - Item 1

/// - Item 2
struct Foo;
```

### Implicit `!` to `()` Conversion

`!` (the never return type, returned by `panic!`, etc.) no longer
implicitly converts to `()`. This is particularly painful for systems
with `todo!` or `panic!` statements, as they will no longer be functions
returning `()` (or `Result<()>`), making them invalid systems for
functions like `add_systems`. The ideal fix would be to accept functions
returning `!` (or rather, _not_ returning), but this is blocked on the
[stabilisation of the `!` type
itself](https://doc.rust-lang.org/std/primitive.never.html), which is
not done.

The "simple" fix would be to add an explicit `-> ()` to system
signatures (e.g., `|| { todo!() }` becomes `|| -> () { todo!() }`).
However, this is _also_ banned, as there is an existing lint which (IMO,
incorrectly) marks this as an unnecessary annotation.

So, the "fix" (read: workaround) is to put these kinds of `|| -> ! { ...
}` closuers into variables and give the variable an explicit type (e.g.,
`fn()`).

```rust
// Valid
let system: fn() = || todo!("Not implemented yet!");
app.add_systems(..., system);

// Invalid
app.add_systems(..., || todo!("Not implemented yet!"));
```

### Temporary Variable Lifetimes

The order in which temporary variables are dropped has changed. The
simple fix here is _usually_ to just assign temporaries to a named
variable before use.

### `gen` is a keyword

We can no longer use the name `gen` as it is reserved for a future
generator syntax. This involved replacing uses of the name `gen` with
`r#gen` (the raw-identifier syntax).

### Formatting has changed

Use statements have had the order of imports changed, causing a
substantial +/-3,000 diff when applied. For now, I have opted-out of
this change by amending `rustfmt.toml`

```toml
style_edition = "2021"
```

This preserves the original formatting for now, reducing the size of
this PR. It would be a simple followup to update this to 2024 and run
`cargo fmt`.

### New `use<>` Opt-Out Syntax

Lifetimes are now implicitly included in RPIT types. There was a handful
of instances where it needed to be added to satisfy the borrow checker,
but there may be more cases where it _should_ be added to avoid
breakages in user code.

### `MyUnitStruct { .. }` is an invalid pattern

Previously, you could match against unit structs (and unit enum
variants) with a `{ .. }` destructuring. This is no longer valid.

### Pretty much every use of `ref` and `mut` are gone

Pattern binding has changed to the point where these terms are largely
unused now. They still serve a purpose, but it is far more niche now.

### `iter::repeat(...).take(...)` is bad

New lint recommends using the more explicit `iter::repeat_n(..., ...)`
instead.

## Migration Guide

The lifetimes of functions using return-position impl-trait (RPIT) are
likely _more_ conservative than they had been previously. If you
encounter lifetime issues with such a function, please create an issue
to investigate the addition of `+ use<...>`.

## Notes

- Check the individual commits for a clearer breakdown for what
_actually_ changed.

Cleanup publish process (#17728)

- publish script copy the license files to all subcrates, meaning that
all publish are dirty. this breaks git verification of crates
- the order and list of crates to publish is manually maintained,
leading to error. cargo 1.84 is more strict and the list is currently
wrong

`--allow-dirty` flag
- instead of a manual list of crates, get it from `cargo package
--workspace`

## Notes

- I left `PreHashMap`, `PreHashMapExt`, and `TypeIdMap` in `bevy_utils`
as they might be candidates for micro-crating. They can always be moved
into `bevy_platform_support` at a later date if desired.

Instead of needing code like this to import an `Arc`:

This applies to many other types, but the goal is overall the same:
allowing crates to use `std`-like types without the boilerplate of
conditional compilation and platform-dependencies.

- Replace imports of `bevy_utils::Instant` with
`bevy_platform_support::time::Instant`
- Replace imports of `bevy::utils::Instant` with
`bevy::platform_support::time::Instant`

## Notes

- `bevy_platform_support` hasn't been reserved on `crates.io`
- ~~`bevy_platform_support` is not re-exported from `bevy` at this time.
It may be worthwhile exporting this crate, but I am unsure of a
reasonable name to export it under (`platform_support` may be a bit
wordy for user-facing).~~
- I've included an implementation of `Instant` which is suitable for
`no_std` platforms that are not Wasm for the sake of eliminating feature
gates around its use. It may be a controversial inclusion, so I'm happy
to remove it if required.
- There are many other items (`spin`, `bevy_utils::Sync(Unsafe)Cell`,
etc.) which should be added to this crate. I have kept the initial scope
small to demonstrate utility without making this too unwieldy.

Downgrade clippy::allow_attributes and clippy::allow_attributes_without_reason to warn (#17320)

I realized that setting these to `deny` may have been a little
aggressive - especially since we upgrade warnings to denies in CI.

Downgrades these lints to `warn`, so that compiles can work locally. CI
will still treat these as denies.

If you were importing `tracing` via `bevy::utils::tracing`, instead use
`bevy::log::tracing`. Note that many items within `tracing` are also
directly re-exported from `bevy::log` as well, so you may only need
`bevy::log` for the most common items (e.g., `warn!`, `trace!`, etc.).
This also applies to the `log_once!` family of macros.

## Notes

- While this doesn't reduce the line-count in `bevy_utils`, it further
decouples the internal crates from `bevy_utils`, making its eventual
removal more feasible in the future.
- I have just imported `tracing` as we do for all dependencies. However,
a workspace dependency may be more appropriate for version management.

Instead import these directly from either `std::time` or `web_time` as
appropriate for your target platform.

## Notes

`Duration` and `TryFromFloatSecsError` are both re-exports from
`core::time` regardless of whether they are used from `web_time` or
`std::time`, so there is no value gained from re-exporting them from
`bevy_utils::time` as well. As for `SystemTime` and `SystemTimeError`,
no Bevy internal crates or examples rely on these types. Since Bevy
doesn't have a `Time<Wall>` resource for interacting with wall-time (and
likely shouldn't need one), I think removing these from `bevy_utils`
entirely and waiting for a use-case to justify inclusion is a reasonable
path forward.

Remove Implicit std Prelude from no_std Crates (#17086)
# Background

In `no_std` compatible crates, there is often an `std` feature which
will allow access to the standard library. Currently, with the `std`
feature _enabled_, the
[`std::prelude`](https://doc.rust-lang.org/std/prelude/index.html) is
implicitly imported in all modules. With the feature _disabled_, instead
the [`core::prelude`](https://doc.rust-lang.org/core/prelude/index.html)
is implicitly imported. This creates a subtle and pervasive issue where
`alloc` items _may_ be implicitly included (if `std` is enabled), or
must be explicitly included (if `std` is not enabled).

# Objective

- Make the implicit imports for `no_std` crates consistent regardless of
what features are/not enabled.

## Solution

- Replace the `cfg_attr` "double negative" `no_std` attribute with
conditional compilation to _include_ `std` as an external crate.

I had previously used the "double negative" version of `no_std` based on
general consensus that it was "cleaner" within the Rust embedded
community. However, this implicit prelude issue likely was considered
when forming this consensus. I believe the reason why is the items most
affected by this issue are provided by the `alloc` crate, which is
rarely used within embedded but extensively used within Bevy.

caused an error.

Add no_std support to bevy_ecs (#16758)
# Objective

- Contributes to #15460

## Solution

- Added the following features:
  - `std` (default)
  - `async_executor` (default)
  - `edge_executor`
  - `critical-section`
  - `portable-atomic`
- Gated `tracing` in `bevy_utils` to allow compilation on certain
platforms
- Switched from `tracing` to `log` for simple message logging within
`bevy_ecs`. Note that `tracing` supports capturing from `log` so this
should be an uncontroversial change.
- Fixed imports and added feature gates as required 
- Made `bevy_tasks` optional within `bevy_ecs`. Turns out it's only
needed for parallel operations which are already gated behind
`multi_threaded` anyway.

## Testing

- Added to `compile-check-no-std` CI command
- `cargo check -p bevy_ecs --no-default-features --features
edge_executor,critical-section,portable-atomic --target
thumbv6m-none-eabi`
- `cargo check -p bevy_ecs --no-default-features --features

## Draft Release Notes

Bevy's core ECS now supports `no_std` platforms.

In prior versions of Bevy, it was not possible to work with embedded or
niche platforms due to our reliance on the standard library, `std`. This
has blocked a number of novel use-cases for Bevy, such as an embedded
database for IoT devices, or for creating games on retro consoles.

With this release, `bevy_ecs` no longer requires `std`. To use Bevy on a
`no_std` platform, you must disable default features and enable the new
`edge_executor` and `critical-section` features. You may also need to
enable `portable-atomic` and `critical-section` if your platform does
not natively support all atomic types and operations used by Bevy.

the parity between `std` and `no_std`. We look forward to seeing what
kinds of applications are now possible with Bevy!

## Notes

- Creating PR in draft to ensure CI is passing before requesting
reviews.
- This implementation has no support for multithreading in `no_std`,
especially due to `NonSend` being unsound if allowed in multithreading.
The reason is we cannot check the `ThreadId` in `no_std`, so we have no
mechanism to at-runtime determine if access is sound.

Update hashbrown to 0.15 (#15801)
Updating dependencies; adopted version of #15696. (Supercedes #15696.)

Long answer: hashbrown is no longer using ahash by default, meaning that
we can't use the default-hasher methods with ahasher. So, we have to use
the longer-winded versions instead. This takes the opportunity to also
switch our default hasher as well, but without actually enabling the
default-hasher feature for hashbrown, meaning that we'll be able to
change our hasher more easily at the cost of all of these method calls
being obnoxious forever.

One large change from 0.15 is that `insert_unique_unchecked` is now
`unsafe`, and for cases where unsafe code was denied at the crate level,
I replaced it with `insert`.

## Migration Guide

`bevy_utils` has updated its version of `hashbrown` to 0.15 and now
defaults to `foldhash` instead of `ahash`. This means that if you've
hard-coded your hasher to `bevy_utils::AHasher` or separately used the
`ahash` crate in your code, you may need to switch to `foldhash` to
ensure that everything works like it does in Bevy.

This required reworking the internals a bit, namely stripping out a lot
of the `Reflect` usage, as that implementation was fundamentally
incompatible with the `AnimatedField` pattern. `Reflect` was being used
in this context just to downcast traits. But we can get downcasting
behavior without the `Reflect` requirement by implementing `Downcast`
for `AnimationCurveEvaluator`.

This also reworks "evaluator identity" to support either a (Component /
Field) pair, or a TypeId. This allows properties to reuse evaluators,
even if they have different accessor methods. The "contract" here is
that for a given (Component / Field) pair, the accessor will return the
same value. Fields are identified by their Reflect-ed field index. The
(TypeId, usize) is prehashed and cached to optimize for lookup speed.

This removes the built-in hard-coded TranslationCurve / RotationCurve /
ScaleCurve in favor of AnimatableField.

This PR adds `#[doc(fake_variadic)]` to that were previously not
supported by rustdoc.

Thanks to an [upstream
contribution](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/132115) by yours
truly, `#[doc(fake_variadic)]` is now supported on impls such as `impl
QueryData for AnyOf<(T, ...)>` 🎉
Requires the latest nightly compiler (2024-10-25) which is already
available on [docs.rs](https://docs.rs/about/builds).

Add core and alloc over std Lints (#15281)
# Objective

- Fixes #6370
- Closes #6581

## Solution

- Added the following lints to the workspace:
  - `std_instead_of_core`
  - `std_instead_of_alloc`
  - `alloc_instead_of_core`
- Used `cargo +nightly fmt` with [item level use
formatting](https://rust-lang.github.io/rustfmt/?version=v1.6.0&search=#Item%5C%3A)
to split all `use` statements into single items.
- Used `cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --all-features --fix
--allow-dirty` to _attempt_ to resolve the new linting issues, and
intervened where the lint was unable to resolve the issue automatically
(usually due to needing an `extern crate alloc;` statement in a crate
root).
- Manually removed certain uses of `std` where negative feature gating
prevented `--all-features` from finding the offending uses.
- Used `cargo +nightly fmt` with [crate level use
formatting](https://rust-lang.github.io/rustfmt/?version=v1.6.0&search=#Crate%5C%3A)
to re-merge all `use` statements matching Bevy's previous styling.
- Manually fixed cases where the `fmt` tool could not re-merge `use`
statements due to conditional compilation attributes.

## Testing

- Ran CI locally

## Migration Guide

The MSRV is now 1.81. Please update to this version or higher.

## Notes

- This is a _massive_ change to try and push through, which is why I've
outlined the semi-automatic steps I used to create this PR, in case this
fails and someone else tries again in the future.
- Making this change has no impact on user code, but does mean Bevy
contributors will be warned to use `core` and `alloc` instead of `std`
where possible.
- This lint is a critical first step towards investigating `no_std`
options for Bevy.

Remove allocation in get_short_name (#15294)
`ShortName` is lazily evaluated and does not allocate, instead providing
`Display` and `Debug` implementations which write directly to a
formatter using the original algorithm. When using `ShortName` in format
strings (`panic`, `dbg`, `format`, etc.) you can directly use the
`ShortName` type. If you require a `String`, simply call
`ShortName(...).to_string()`.

# Objective

- Remove the requirement for allocation when using `get_short_name`

## Solution

- Added new type `ShortName` which wraps a name and provides its own
`Debug` and `Display` implementations, using the original
`get_short_name` algorithm without the need for allocating.
- Removed `get_short_name`, as `ShortName(...)` is more performant and
ergonomic.
- Added `ShortName::of::<T>` method to streamline the common use-case
for name shortening.

instances of this are present in Bevy, and the user can get the original

## Solution

Added `alloc` and `std` features to `bevy_utils` (`std` is enabled by
default), allowing the crate's use in `no_std` contexts.

## Testing

- CI passed locally.
- Used `bevy_utils` in a `no_std` crate as an experiment and compiled
successfully.

## Migration Guide

If you were importing `bevy_utils` and setting `default_features` to
`false`, but relying on elements which are now gated behind the `std` or
`alloc` features, include the relevant feature in your `Cargo.toml`.

## Notes

- Bevy already includes a single `no_std` crate, `bevy_ptr`, so there is
precedent for this change.
- As `bevy_utils` is widely used across the rest of Bevy, further work
to make Bevy `no_std` compatible would be blocked on this crate, if such
work was to be undertaken.
- Most of the changes in this PR are just the removal of an unnecessary
call to `to_string()` within unit tests.

Enable clippy::check-private-items so that missing_safety_doc will apply to private functions as well (#15161)
Enabled `check-private-items` in `clippy.toml` and then fixed the
resulting errors. Most of these were simply misformatted and of the
remaining:
- ~Added `#[allow(clippy::missing_safety_doc)]` to~ Removed unsafe from
a pair of functions in `bevy_utils/futures` which are only unsafe so
that they can be passed to a function which requires `unsafe fn`
- Removed `unsafe` from `UnsafeWorldCell::observers` as from what I can
tell it is always safe like `components`, `bundles` etc. (this should be
checked)
- Added safety docs to:
- `Bundles::get_storage_unchecked`: Based on the function that writes to
`dynamic_component_storages`
- `Bundles::get_storages_unchecked`: Based on the function that writes
to `dynamic_bundle_storages`
   - `QueryIterationCursor::init_empty`: Duplicated from `init`
- `QueryIterationCursor::peek_last`: Thanks Giooschi (also added
internal unsafe blocks)
   - `tests::drop_ptr`: Moved safety comment out to the doc string
 
This lint would also apply to `missing_errors_doc`, `missing_panics_doc`
and `unnecessary_safety_doc` if we chose to enable any of those at some
point, although there is an open
[issue](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust-clippy/issues/13074) to
separate these options.

Unify crate-level preludes (#15080)
# Objective

- Crate-level prelude modules, such as `bevy_ecs::prelude`, are plagued
with inconsistency! Let's fix it!

## Solution

Format all preludes based on the following rules:

1. All preludes should have brief documentation in the format of:
   > The _name_ prelude.
   >
> This includes the most common types in this crate, re-exported for
your convenience.
2. All documentation should be outer, not inner. (`///` instead of
`//!`.)
3. No prelude modules should be annotated with `#[doc(hidden)]`. (Items
within them may, though I'm not sure why this was done.)

## Testing

- I manually searched for the term `mod prelude` and updated all
occurrences by hand. 🫠
